ITS Works with The 61508 Association for Safety

8th September 2007

Industrial Technology Systems Ltd (ITS) has demonstrated its commitment to striving for safer working practices by joining The 61508 Association and working with cross-industry organisations to achieve compliance.

The Association, which began in March 2003 from an informal club of 12 like-minded manufacturers, users and certifiers of safety-related systems, is dedicated to working towards achieving dependable, cost-effective methods for demonstrating compliance with IEC 61508, the international standard for electrical, electronic and programmable electronic safety related systems.

By working together, the 61508 Association aims to demonstrate that organisations can eliminate unsafe practice, meet HSE and Environment Agency requirements, and make significant financial savings - but most importantly, secure a safer plant.

The eight-part Standard sets out the requirements for ensuring that systems are designed, implemented, operated and maintained to a required safety integrity level (SIL). It specifies a process that can be followed by all links in the supply chain so that information about the system can be communicated using common terminology and system parameters.

The 61508 Association’s primary aim is to develop and promote the acceptance of Conformity Assessment of Safety Systems (CASS) in the marketplace, a transparent and consistent method for assessing compliance of a company, system or product with the standard’s relevant requirements.
